Matthew Cooper's design for Arctic Monkeys' fifth album became one of the decade's most recognizable covers. The stark black-and-white waveform appears deceptively simple, but reveals the album title 'AM' hidden within its amplitude-modulated signal pattern.

Cooper, a freelance designer who graduated from Harrow College of Higher Education, had already worked with luminaries like Franz Ferdinand, Four Tet, and Noel Gallagher. For AM, he created artwork that drew inspiration from amplitude modulation waves used in radio transmission - a clever visual pun on the album's initials.

The cover artwork was revealed on July 15, 2013, three months before the album's September release. Its minimal aesthetic perfectly complemented the animated music video for 'Do I Wanna Know?' directed by David Wilson and created by animation agency Blinkink. The video began with similar white soundwaves vibrating against a black background, creating seamless visual synergy between the album art and promotional material.

According to frontman Alex Turner, the album title was inspired by The Velvet Underground's 1985 compilation 'VU'. Turner admitted, 'I actually stole it from the Velvet Underground, I'll just confess that now and get it out of the way.' The band had also considered calling the album 'The New Black' after a guitar amp they used extensively during recording.

The waveform design sparked various interpretations among fans and critics. Some noted its resemblance to audio visualization software, while others saw suggestive imagery in the curved lines. The amplitude modulation reference tied directly to the album's sonic exploration of hip-hop influenced rhythms and desert rock textures.

Cooper's design work extends beyond album covers to promotional materials and advertisements. His aesthetic draws inspiration from constructivists like Kurt Schwitters and contemporary artists, working from his Shoreditch studio surrounded by 'piles of books, magazines, records, CDs and assorted junk.'

The AM cover helped define the visual identity of one of the most successful Arctic Monkeys releases. The album topped charts in multiple countries and earned NME's Album of the Decade award for the 2010s. Cooper's minimalist approach proved that sometimes the most powerful designs hide in plain sight.
