About Behind the Covers
Behind the Covers is an encyclopedia of album cover art — the stories behind the most iconic, controversial, and visually groundbreaking record sleeves ever made.
Why Album Covers Matter
Album covers are where music meets visual art. A great cover doesn't just package sound — it shapes how we hear it. The prism on The Dark Side of the Moon is inseparable from the music inside. The banana on The Velvet Underground & Nico told you everything you needed to know before the needle dropped. The baby chasing a dollar bill on Nevermind defined a generation's relationship with capitalism before Cobain sang a single note.
These images were created by some of the most inventive designers, photographers, and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries — from Andy Warhol and Peter Saville to Storm Thorgerson and Virgil Abloh. Their work turned a 12-inch cardboard sleeve into a canvas for fine art, political statements, visual jokes, and cultural provocations.
What We Cover
Every entry on Behind the Covers tells the complete story of how an album cover came to be: who designed it, how the concept was born, how the photo was shot or the art was created, what the label thought, what got censored, and how the image shaped the album's legacy. We also include a detailed visual analysis of each cover's composition, color palette, typography, and cultural significance.
Our collection spans eight decades of music — from the hand-painted gatefolds of the 1950s to the digitally native artwork of the 2020s — across every genre from jazz and folk to hip-hop and electronic music. We cover the designers who created timeless visual identities, the photographers who captured defining images, and the artists who turned commercial packaging into lasting art.
Editorial Standards
Accuracy matters. Every entry is researched against multiple sources and cross-referenced for factual accuracy. We credit designers, photographers, art directors, and illustrators by name whenever possible. If a credit is uncertain or disputed, we say so. We don't fabricate quotes, and we don't repeat myths without examining them.
All album artwork is displayed in low resolution for editorial and educational purposes under fair use. Behind the Covers is an independent publication and is not affiliated with any record label, artist, or rights holder.
